VIV Arts and Transmoderna Talk of Art as Experiences and Present a New Digital Artwork at House of Koko in London

Coinciding with Dixon’s takeover of Koko’s theatre in London, VIV Arts was invited to host a panel celebrating Transmoderna, the artist aggregate and studio founded by Dixon and Ana Ofak in 2018. The panel was introduced by Oliva Sartogo and moderated by Carlota Dochao Naveira, and was co-organised with the support of Serpentine Galleries Patrons.

The discussion followed by Dixon’s performance created an unparalleled dialogue between Transmoderna’s artistic and musical practices. Ofak spoke to Transmoderna’s transition from music stages into more traditional art spaces, creating intimate experiences primarily focused on virtual reality installations. “We realised that [art exhibitions] is something that we would actually want to pursue as Transmoderna, not just concentrating on realising events within the electronic music scene, but also trying to create more of the experiences that people, for themselves, in the very intimate space of virtual reality, could dive into.”
Their shift to the art world has not been at the exclusion of music spaces. Dixon noted that despite the success of their virtual reality works and installations in more traditional art contexts, the dance floor is an equally effective place to experience Transmoderna’s artistic output. “We decided that it [Terraforming, 2021] shouldn’t only be placed in museums. We want to bridge electronic music and computational arts […] and the place to do this is electronic music events.” The beauty of the collective and the work they produce is that they exist firmly in both realms.

The panel concluded by premiering Transmoderna’s artwork, Mycoforest, a 3-minute video work on a loop. “In a lot of ways, Mycoforest encapsulates the ethos of VIV Arts,” Dochao Naveira stated, “it exemplifies the idea of collecting artworks based on time-based experiences.” This artwork marks the first of many collaborations, turning experiences into lasting tributes.
